The History of Rogers

Back when Alcy was simply a dirt road outside the city limits, Johnson’s Grocery was a landmark of the local community. In the early 1970s, Mr. Lucius Rogers leased the Johnson building to open up his own business until 1977, when he finally purchased the property outright. In the 1980s, the Rogers Store underwent a complete renovation and expansion. Mr. Rogers had become a neighborhood fixture by that point and was known as an “uncle” in Alcy Ball. His store offered all the provisions of a local market and school children stopped by morning and afternoon to grab snacks and be greeted by Mr. Rogers himself.

In the early 2000s, Mr. Rogers leased the building to tenants who didn’t care well for the property. Suddenly, the Rogers Store wasn’t the safe haven it had been for decades and regulars stopped dropping in. In 2019, the Alcy Ball Development Corporation connected with Mr. Rogers and purchased the building. We moved our offices onsite and opened the facility as a gathering spot and event center for neighbors. Since October 2020, we’ve had over 2,000 visitors, hosted 50+ events, and seen neighbors regain their former pride in coming to Rogers Store.
